Five aspiring reporters receive journalism scholarships from SPH Media

Ms Kyleen Cabael, a 22-year-old NTU undergraduate and SP alumna, successfully pitched her own story idea just a month into her internship with The Straits Times. She reported on deepfake sextortion after learning about acquaintances who had been targeted by scammers threatening to distribute fake nude images unless paid. Her article, published on 23 June in The Sunday Times, aimed to caution others about such scams. A second-year English major at NTU, Ms Cabael studied creative writing for TV and new media at SP. She was one of five recipients of the SPH Media Journalism Scholarship in 2024, receiving the award from SPH Media Trust chairman Khaw Boon Wan on 24 July. The scholarship covers full tuition, provides a monthly allowance, and offers practical experience through internships, with recipients committing to a three- to six-year bond with the media company upon graduation.
