Inspired by her karung guni grandfather, she started Commenhers to make upcycling cool and accessible – CNA, 15 November 2025

Commenhers, co-founded by CEO Nuryanee Anisah Mohamed Noor, bridges corporate waste reduction with livelihood creation for women. The company partners businesses to upcycle unused textiles and discarded materials into products such as bags and small furniture. This work is done by women from vulnerable groups — including the elderly, single mothers, and stay-at-home mothers from low-income families — who gain sewing skills and craft expertise through the process. Nuryanee’s inspiration came from her late grandfather, a karung guni who repurposed discarded items, which she considers the “OG upcycler”. She founded Commenhers in 2019 as a school project during her first year in SP’s Diploma in Business Administration, together with four teammates. Their early outreach to companies like PSA Singapore for unused textiles revealed the significant potential of upcycling at scale, convincing Nuryanee that the project could grow into meaningful real-world impact rather than remain just a school assignment.
