Interview with Shanker Maniam on Aviation Sector

Singapore’s aviation sector continues to present strong career opportunities for students, as highlighted in a recent Ethiroli programme discussing the industry’s importance to the nation’s economy and future growth. Senior Lecturer Mr Shanker Maniam from SP’s School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering shared insights into the diverse educational pathways available for students from polytechnics, universities, and the ITE. According to Mr Shanker, students can explore various fields within the aviation and aerospace sectors, including commercial aviation, military aerospace, unmanned aerial systems (drones), satellites, and rockets. He explained that academic programmes are generally structured into two main specialisations: Aerospace Electronics, which focuses on avionics systems, and Aeronautical Engineering, which centres on aircraft structures and design. Students typically begin with foundational engineering studies before progressing to specialised courses and elective modules. Completing these three levels of study broadens graduates’ career prospects and prepares them for a range of roles within the aviation industry. The programme also featured students who shared their personal aspirations. SP Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (DASE) student Karumuthumanigandan Guru Vignesh, spoke about his strong interest in the aviation sector. Fellow DASE student Khrishmitha Anbalakan shared that her passion for aviation began in childhood. Meanwhile, Akshay, a student from NYP, said he was inspired to pursue aviation by his uncles, who serve in the Air Force. Similar news reported in Vasantham and Oli 968.
