Young Singaporeans continue to face career uncertainty and concerns about keeping their skills up to date in a rapidly changing economy. The article profiles Merlyn Tay, an SP Visual Communications alumna who began her career during the Covid-19 pandemic and later lost her job following a restructuring, highlighting the challenges young professionals face in developing their careers. Findings from the National Youth Council’s engagements with more than 60,000 youths aged 15 to 35 show that 49% are stressed by uncertainty about the future, while 52% worry about keeping up with required skills. Nearly two in five also see AI as a threat to job opportunities, amid concerns that technology could reduce entry-level roles or make some skills redundant. The SG Youth Plan, a five-year roadmap led by MCCY and NYC, aims to help young Singaporeans become more confident, connected and contributing citizens.
