Retractable shelter fills gap and shelters passengers getting on and off buses

Students from SP developed a practical invention called “Gap Stop” to help commuters stay dry when boarding buses during rainy weather. The project was showcased at the SouthWest Community InnoLab Symposium held at Singapore University of Technology and Design, where more than 100 students from nine institutes of higher learning presented ideas to solve everyday community problems. The SP team from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment noticed that there is often an uncovered gap between buses and bus stops. This can be inconvenient and unsafe, especially for elderly commuters or people using mobility aids during rain. Led by lecturer Ms Toh Sok Na, the team spent five months developing a retractable bus stop shelter extension using 3D-printing technology. The prototype can be attached to existing bus stops and extend up to 50cm forward to cover the gap between the bus and the shelter, without requiring manual operation.
