Stolz Engineering has developed a “Smart Cooling Tower Internet of Things (IoT) Sustainability Framework” that uses existing sensors, IoT technology and AI to optimise older cooling towers. The system monitors factors such as temperature, water usage, pressure, weather, and equipment condition, allowing operators to adjust functions such as fan speeds and improve energy efficiency. The solution follows a “retrofit-first” approach, focusing on improving existing infrastructure rather than replacing or rebuilding it. Stolz plans to deploy the AI-integrated platform by Q1 2027, with the aim of applying it across its 1,000 Singapore facilities within two years. SP was involved in the development through a proof-of-concept using one of its cooling towers. The sensors and platform were tested under actual operating conditions. Based on the results, Stolz projected that applying the framework to a large 40-cell cooling tower could generate up to S$2 million in annual cost savings, alongside reductions in energy use and carbon emissions.
