In this commentary, Billy Koh, a well-known local musician, who graduated from SP, recalls the era when “a new generation of young people were seeking a sense of identity” in the local music scene. He started his career in the 1980s with Singapore's Xinyao music movement, banding with a group of musicians to establish music company Ocean Butterflies. At the time, he had no idea that this extracurricular activity would shape his career path and unexpectedly help Singaporean pop music reach the Chinese-speaking world. He also reflects on the relentless pace of technology: from vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, to MP3s, even “listening to music online” would one day be replaced by new formats.
