Singapore Awards $4.1M to Three Projects Upcycling Food Waste Into High-Value Products

Singapore has awarded S$5.3 million to three projects under NEA’s Closing the Resource Loop initiative to transform food waste into high-value products, supporting the country's goals of reducing waste and strengthening food sustainability. The projects focus on converting by-products from beer brewing, coffee grounds and vegetable waste into useful materials and ingredients. One of the funded companies, Mottainai Food Tech, is developing plant-based tuna flakes from brewers' spent grain through fermentation. The company is collaborating with SP's Food Innovation and Resource Centre and NTU's Asian Centre for Health Behavioural Insights & Interventions to commercialise the product. Another project by A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering is converting used coffee grounds into sustainable phase change materials for cold-chain logistics, while Ferm2Farm is transforming vegetable peels into food flavourings, protein-rich animal feed and crop fertilisers.
