SingPost CEO encourages youth to break the 'glass ceiling'

Speaking at the fourth session of the Jauhari Series, organised by Berita Harian (BH), recipient of the BH 2023 Jauhari Award, Mr Shahrin Abdol Salam said while his peers were playing after school, he had to clean his father's shop in Clementi. Although his 'prelim' exam results were less than satisfactory while studying at Gan Eng Seng School and it did not allow him to continue his studies at junior college, Mr Shahrin refused to let the results discourage him. He continued his studies to obtain a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at SP, a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from RMIT University, and a Master of Science degree in technology management from the National University of Singapore. Throughout his career, Mr Shahrin has held the position of adviser to the CEO of a transport company in the United Arab Emirates. Mr Shahrin, who started his career as a maintenance engineer with SMRT in 1998, became the Managing Director of SMRT's Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). Currently, he is the Chief Executive Officer of SingPost. Looking back at his career, the 51-year-old CEO said it is important for a person to 'break the glass ceiling' to reach one's true potential.
