Throughout her journey in the maritime world, Ms Sahira Sha'ri often received negative comments from people around her including her coursemates who doubted her ability. Now, at 28, she can proudly stand as Singapore's only Malay female chief officer at the helm of the luxury cruise ship Celebrity Beyond, which has sailed to various ports around the world including the Amazon, China, and Brazil. She shared that her career began when she was at a cargo ship company in Tuas shipyard, where she had an internship during her diploma studies. Ms Sahira, who completed her Diploma in Nautical Studies at SP in 2017, said she started working at Tuas shipyard around the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. As an officer, her scope of work includes modifying old ships and she considers it as a stepping stone for her to expand her maritime expertise. Starting as second officer, she was promoted to first officer and currently serves as chief officer for Celebrity Beyond, a luxury cruise ship owned by Celebrity Cruises.
