SP Diploma in Business Administration student, Joey Chan Rou Yu, and Diploma in Accountancy student, Gabrian Yuen Zheng Jie, developed Peelergent, a natural, multi-purpose surface cleaner made from upcycled orange peels. Inspired by Joey’s grandmother’s homemade cleaning solutions and lessons on sustainability, the duo aimed to create a family- and pet-friendly alternative to harsh chemical cleaners that also addresses food waste. Peelergent’s formula combines orange peels rich in D-limonene, vinegar, and essential oils, offering effective cleaning while neutralising odours and being safe for sensitive skin. Through extensive trial-and-error testing with family and friends, the team optimised its cleaning performance and scent. Their project was supported by SP’s Business Essentials Through Action (BETA) programme, which provided mentorship, hands-on entrepreneurship experience, and opportunities to practice business skills like marketing, budgeting, teamwork, and leadership. The students emphasised that their complementary skills—Gabrian in finances and Joey in market research—helped them balance creativity and practicality in running the business. Beyond cleaning, Peelergent contributes to wellness and sustainability, creating safer homes and empowering users to make eco-conscious choices. It’s available for pre-order through their social media platform.
