Maritime education must evolve rapidly to keep pace with technological advances transforming the shipping industry, including artificial intelligence, automation, digitalisation and alternative fuels. Industry leaders noted that future maritime professionals will need a broader mix of technical, digital and sustainability-related skills to remain relevant. Captain Chatur Wahyu, Director of SP’s Singapore Maritime Academy, highlighted the need for maritime education providers to continuously adapt curricula and training methods to reflect industry developments. He emphasised that maritime institutions must equip students not only with traditional seafaring competencies but also with knowledge of emerging technologies and evolving operational requirements. The article noted that SP, through the Singapore Maritime Academy, works closely with industry partners to ensure its programmes remain aligned with real-world needs. This includes preparing students for a maritime sector that is increasingly digitalised, data-driven and focused on sustainability.
