Will textbooks still be useful in the AI era?

In this commentary, the writer argues that AI is making traditional textbooks less relevant by providing unlimited, personalised explanations, shifting education away from scarce information toward abundant knowledge access. It noted that polytechnics in Singapore are integrating AI into teaching and learning. TP has introduced AI-enabled classrooms with real-time transcription and interactive tools, while SP uses generative AI tutors for simulations and to bridge learning gaps. RP plans to integrate AI into half of its modules by 2027. Meanwhile, NYP and NP are embedding customised bots for assessment and the ethical use of AI. However, it emphasises that the real purpose of education is not memorisation but developing critical thinking and judgment, warning that without these skills, students may become overly dependent on AI and lack the ability to evaluate, question, and truly understand information.
