Without a fixed income but inevitably needing to spend money, Students interviewed are cutting back on expenses to cope with rising prices

Students in Singapore are increasingly affected by rising living costs, especially food prices, with meals becoming significantly more expensive and straining limited budgets, prompting many to cut spending, seek cheaper options, or work part-time. SP student, Chen Wenqiang, noted that his mixed rice meal increased from just over S$3 to S$5.30, making it feel “less worth it,” prompting him to cook at home unless dining with friends. Another SP student, He Yishan, shared that while government vouchers help ease costs, he still prefers to reduce spending by eating at home, saying, “If I eat out, it’s usually with friends or my parents. Otherwise, I choose to cook at home.” Overall, students are adjusting their habits, cutting back on eating out and relying more on home-cooked meals, to cope with rising expenses.
