Yeo Mei Zhen and Cai Zhenning won a student landscape design competition jointly organized by Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) and Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) in 2024. At that time, both were third year students in the Diploma in Landscape Architecture (DLA) when they entered ‘Serenity Circle Garden’ in the competition. On 17 Oct 2025, Mei Zhen and Zhenning were invited to the opening of the garden after AMKTC implemented their design.
The Serenity Circle Garden is a therapeutic garden that aims to create a harmonious, restorative environment for elderly residents and their families.
Mei Zhen and Zhenning who are now undergraduates of Bachelor in Landscape Architecture (BLA), NUS made time for their design’s opening day.
When asked to share their experience and advice their juniors:
Yeo Mei Zhen:
I feel motivated as my design on paper became reality. My advice to juniors would be to learn how to balance creativity and practicality. I would like to thank AMKTC and SILA mentor for mentoring us and guidance throughout the project.”
Serenity Circle Garden located at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.
Cai Zhenning:
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to have my design built in real life. I am motivated to continue with the LA profession so that I can see more of my designs come to life. Designing on paper is a lot different from real life as many factors will affect the outcome due to site constraints. Thank you, AMKTC for the opportunity and SILA Mentor for guidance throughout the entire project, I have learnt a lot more in design related to maintenance aspects.”
