Biomedical Science Student Volunteers at the Sengkang General Hospital’s Night Watchers Programme

From curiosity about the human body to a calling in care, this is the story of Justin Tan, our Year 3 Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) student who found clarity in the medical field through volunteering with Sengkang General Hospital’s Night Watchers Programme.

As one of the youngest volunteers in the programme, Justin tries to spend at least once a week caring for patients during the graveyard shift (9pm–6am). Instead of a traditional internship or shadowing opportunities, he chose long-term volunteering, where being present over time revealed the deeply human side of healthcare.

You may be wondering, how does he do it all? Balancing the rigorous demands of his diploma alongside volunteering isn’t easy, but with the support of his lecturers, friends and mentors, Justin found purpose and clarity in the journey.
