CLS Students Take Action on World Cleanup Day 2026

On 19 September 2026, students from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences (CLS) joined Let’s Do It World and Kindred Community for a coastal cleanup at East Coast Park in support of World Cleanup Day 2026, an official United Nations International Day. Working alongside community volunteers, students rolled up their sleeves to help protect Singapore’s coastline and raise awareness of the global waste challenge.

Together, participants collected an impressive 869.4 kg of litter and waste in a single morning. From discarded plastic packaging to debris carried across oceans by currents, the findings highlighted how waste pollution transcends borders and impacts marine ecosystems worldwide.

Beyond the cleanup effort, students gained valuable insights into the environmental consequences of waste and the role individuals can play in creating change. The experience reinforced key principles of responsible consumption and environmental sustainability, while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Through this meaningful service-learning experience, CLS students demonstrated that every action counts towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
