On 21 May 2025, alumni, students, and staff from the Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) course volunteered at Delta Senior School to conduct vision screening for students with special educational needs. The initiative aimed to identify potential vision issues early, supporting students’ learning and daily activities.
Held within the school compound, the screening included visual acuity, eye coordination, and colour vision tests. Students received personalised guidance on eye health, and those with concerns were encouraged to seek further examination. For optometry students, the experience was a valuable opportunity to build empathy, patience, and communication skills essential for working with diverse needs.
Following the success of the May session, the DOPT team was invited back for additional screenings on 15 and 16 September 2025, reaching even more students.
This effort strengthened ties between optometry education and special needs institutions, while promoting inclusive healthcare. Through these initiatives, student optometrists are empowered to make a meaningful impact by improving access to vision care and enhancing the quality of life for youths with special needs.
“The experience was truly eye-opening and greatly enhanced my social skills. The students’ enthusiasm and interaction made the vision screening especially rewarding. I felt proud and contented to share my knowledge in optometry and to educate them on the importance of proper eye health.”
