| CoC Class 3 Deck Preparatory Course |

| COURSE AIMS | This course prepares local and international deck personnel for careers as Junior Deck Officers. Successful completion exempts candidates from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Class 3 Certificate of Competency (CoC3) written examination. Candidates must pass the MPA oral examination for CoC Class 3 Deck Officer certification. The program meets STCW requirements and is recognised internationally.

| ENTRY REQUIREMENTS | Candidates must complete the required sea-service and hold the Basic Safety Training Certificate.
Eligibility criteria for sea service 1. Approved seagoing service of not less than: a) 36 months for direct entry candidates; or b) 12 months for candidates who have satisfactorily completed the Diploma in Nautical Studies conducted by the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA);
2. Performed within the required seagoing service, bridge watch keeping duties under the supervision of the Master or a qualified officer for not less than 6 out of the final 12 months.
3. Candidates with less than 36 months seagoing service may complete an approved Distance Learning Programme (DLP) including Correspondence course and Cadet Record Book (TARB) for possible remission of sea time from MPA. 4. Qualifying seagoing service must be in the deck department, reckoned from engagement to discharge, with at least 6 months of qualifying service within the 5 years preceding the application. Candidates for Direct entry COC3 Deck course should comply with the following:
1. Sea Service must be on ships engaged in International voyages;
2. Sea Service must be on ships with more than 3000 gross tonnage;
3. Total sea time of more than 36 months in Deck department (CADET, O/S, or A/B) (Trainee sea time or sea time solely as O/S will not be admissible);
4. Bridge watch keeping on these ships under the supervision of certified officers to be at least 6 months within the last 12 month.
5. Basic education: Class 12 (or) 2nd year university (or) A-level more than 50% in Science (Physics, Chemistry), Maths, and English. Candidates with lower scores will require DLP completion. The admission process consists of four steps:
1. Submit Preliminary assessment to SMA [Link for MS Form]
2. SMA will issue the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) to qualified candidates subjected to fulfilment of SMA's criteria.
3. Upon receiving LOA from SMA, candidate to apply for Letter of Eligibility (LOE) from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
4. Upon receiving LOE from MPA, candidate to submit LOE to SMA, SMA will provide admission details. |
| SCHEDULE / DURATION | Two intake annually - April and October

| COURSE CONTENTS/MODULES | The course covers the following topics as per IMO/STCW regulation.
Practical Navigation Coastal Navigation General Ship Knowledge Meteorology Ship Operations Applied Science Mathematics

| DURATION | 15 weeks course (excluding term break)
The course excludes the following STCW Short Courses:
Medical First Aid on Board Ship, Electronic Navigation Systems, Basic Tanker Training, GMDSS (GOC), Advanced Fire-fighting, Bridge/Crew Resource Management & Teambuilding (Operational Level) Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat, and Basic Occupational Safety and Security Training Certificate (or any of its components). WITHDRAWAL AND DEFERMENT | Withdrawal notice must be made in writing to Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) via email to Lalitha_Devi_S_SELVAM@sp.edu.sg.
For withdrawal cases, the portion of course fee to be refunded is based on the date of notice as follows:
2 weeks before the commencement of the course - Full refund Less than 2 weeks before commencement of the course - 70% refund On or after date of commencement - No refund * Unless otherwise stated in the course webpage
The Singapore Polytechnic reserves the right to cancel or postpone any of the courses. Applicants will be duly notified and where applicable, the full fees will be refunded.
The Singapore Polytechnic also reserves the right to amend the fees charged or the period and duration of the courses.

BOOKING/REGISTRATION & ENROLMENT | Once 'Letter of Assessment' is issued, candidates will need to apply for 'Letter of Eligibility' (LOE) from 'Maritime and Port Authority' (MPA) Singapore.
Admission details will be given after the candidate obtains LOE from MPA. Will require to login to STEP portal and register of interest for the programme. |
