SP is proud to announce that Lim Yu Shan, Year 3 DARCH student, was awarded the CDIO Academy Winner at the prestigious CDIO Academy held in Melbourne. The event brought together nine participants from Monash University and Singapore Polytechnic, representing diverse fields such as computing, marine, chemical, and mechanical engineering.
More than just an achievement, Yu Shan’s participation in the CDIO Academy exemplified SP’s values of collaboration, innovation, and global engagement.
From engaging in the Academy Challenge to attending in-depth conference sessions, Yu Shan immersed herself in the CDIO educational framework—widely adopted in SP’s engineering and ABE schools. The programme provided a vibrant platform for multidisciplinary teamwork and international exchange, as participants tackled real-world challenges in sustainability.
Yu Shan’s team, together with her teammates designed a key component of a direct air capture (DAC) contactor, a device aimed at removing CO₂ from the atmosphere to offset industrial emissions. The project called for innovative internal structures that minimized pressure drop while maximizing air distribution through carbon capture materials.
Throughout the experience, Yu Shan collaborated with students from various disciplines, exchanging knowledge and skills in a supportive environment. Her team’s synergy was further enhanced by peer-led sharing—such as mini-lectures on DAC from chemical engineering students—and hands-on learning in prototyping and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
Behind the scenes, the Academy’s organizers ensured a seamless experience, coordinating across institutions and adapting content to suit participants’ diverse backgrounds. Facilitators fostered open dialogue, encouraged peer-to-peer learning, and responded to feedback to create an inclusive, engaging environments for all.
Yu Shan’s reflection on the Academy:
“It was an eye-opening experience to see the planning and ongoing evolution behind the CDIO framework. I gained new technical skills and learned the value of working with peers from different disciplines.”
All in all, Yu Shan’s journey at the CDIO Academy highlights the endless possibilities when SP students collaborate with intent, empathy, and a shared purpose—making a mark on the global stage.
