A Community Health and Vision Outreach for Inclusive Care

On 13 December 2025, the SP School of Chemical & Life Sciences’ Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) and Diploma in Optometry (DOPT), in collaboration with Purple Heart at Nanyang, organised a community health and vision care outreach programme at Nanyang Community Club. The initiative aimed to support caregivers and children with special needs through accessible, inclusive healthcare services. The event was honoured by the presence of Mr Ang Wei Neng (Nanyang, West Coast – Jurong West GRC), whose attendance underscored the value of community-led efforts to promote inclusive healthcare.

The programme focused on raising awareness of general health, eye care, and early detection, while offering practical, needs-based support for both caregivers and children. Through interactive activities and hands-on engagement, participants gained useful knowledge about maintaining good health and vision, equipping them with skills that can positively impact their daily lives.

Students from the DOPT conducted vision screenings, provided eye health education, and led related activities, demonstrating strong clinical skills alongside empathy and care. Complementing these efforts, students from the DBS supported the programme through health education and awareness initiatives that enhanced the overall outreach experience. Participants and community partners warmly received their professionalism, teamwork, and compassion.

This meaningful collaboration reflects the shared commitment of all partners to experiential learning, community service, and inclusive care. It also demonstrates how students can extend their learning beyond the classroom to make a tangible, positive impact on the community.

Tan Wei Xi, a DBS Year 2 student shared: “I had the opportunity to share healthcare tips with the Purple Heart attendees, allowing me to apply my knowledge in a meaningful way.”

Jayden Poh, a DOPT Year 3 student shared: “Working together to carry out a vision screening for individuals in the community and their caregivers made the experience truly meaningful and fulfilling.”
