As part of Singapore Polytechnic’s continued emphasis on international exposure and sustainability education, Year 2 students from the Diploma in Chemical Engineering, now renamed to Diploma in Chemical & Biological Engineering (DCBE) participated in an Overseas Study Trip (OST) to Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 10 June 2026. The programme strengthened their understanding of sustainable practices through real world applications aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
At FOLO Farm, students explored organic farming and circular sustainability. They observed how food waste is converted into nutrient rich compost using eco friendly systems such as the Ridan FOLO composter, and learnt about small scale edible gardening for self sufficiency. The immersive setting made learning both practical and meaningful.
The trip also included a natural dye workshop by Xiapism. Students experimented with plant based dyes from onion skins, applied hot extraction technique, and created personalised tote bags. They discovered how vinegar and baking soda can alter dye colours through pH changes.
Overall, the trip deepened students’ appreciation of sustainability. As Aaron Tan Fa Er reflected, the trip broadened his perspective on environmental responsibility, emphasising that sustainable practices are not limited to large-scale industries but can be implemented through conscious decisions and resource management at both individual and community levels.
