EDB Singapore, 20 May 2026 - ECO-Mastermelt is helping to recover valuable metals such as gold, silver and platinum from electronic waste and industrial by-products, while two Singaporean chemists shared how they are building careers in the growing sustainability sector. Nathanael Teo, a chemist at the company, said his interest in chemistry and sustainability led him to the industry after completing a Diploma in Chemical Engineering (now known as Diploma in Chemical & Biological Engineering (DCBE)) at SP and a Chemistry degree at Loughborough University. His work involves analysing waste materials to determine how much precious metal can be recovered for reuse. The article also featured Nicholas Low, an assistant chemist who graduated with a Diploma in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technology from NYP. He said his lecturers’ stories about laboratory work inspired him to pursue chemistry and sustainability-related work. While at ECO-Mastermelt, he attended upskilling courses including a basic ionising radiation safety course at RP, which enabled him to use specialised analytical equipment for metal analysis. Both chemists described the recycling industry as a meaningful and expanding field driven by growing demand for sustainable resource recovery and the global shortage of finite natural resources.
