DASE’s First Batch of RSAF Work-Based Training Students Achieves Top Trainee Award

The School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) celebrates a proud milestone as Nicholas Yong, a student from the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (DASE), received the 55th Cohort Best Trainee Award for the Air Force Engineer–Maintenance (AFE-M) Avionics course.

Nicholas is among the first batch of students from the SP DASE–RSAF Work-Based Training Programme, a unique collaboration between Singapore Polytechnic and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). The programme was designed to provide DASE students with early exposure to real-world aviation engineering environments while they are still studying.

From SP to RSAF

As part of this initiative, selected students undergo structured work-based training during their 5th and 6th semesters, gaining hands-on experience with aircraft avionics systems and participating in training conducted at operational airbases. This allows students to bridge classroom learning with authentic industry practices.

Reflecting on the experience, Nicholas shared:

“In RSAF, training is structured around operational standards, strict SOP compliance, accountability, and real consequences. The expectations are significantly higher, and professionalism is non-negotiable. This programme is especially suitable for those who want early exposure to real operational standards rather than waiting until after graduation.”

Why RSAF work based training   cohort best trainee

Upon graduating from DASE, Nicholas will continue his journey with the RSAF as an Air Force Engineer–Maintenance (AFE-M) under a five-year employment contract that includes his National Service commitment.

This achievement highlights the strong industry partnerships and applied learning opportunities offered by the School of EEE, enabling students to develop industry-ready skills and pursue meaningful careers in aerospace engineering.

The SP DASE–RSAF Work-Based Training Programme represents an exciting pathway for DASE students to gain hands-on avionics experience, exposure to operational aviation environments, and direct career opportunities in Singapore’s aerospace and defence sectors.
