9 and 16 March 2026 - 20 students from School of Computing (SoC) participated in two one-day overseas study trips to Batam, Indonesia. Organised as part of the school’s global exposure initiatives, the trips brought together SoC students alongside peers from other schools to explore how sustainability is integrated into real-world business operations while experiencing the local culture.
The day began with an insightful sharing by the Singapore Consulate-General in Batam, where students gained a deeper understanding of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Indonesia, as well as the role of supporting Singaporeans abroad. This was followed by a learning journey at Harris Resort Waterfront Batam, where students explored sustainability practices in hospitality. From caring for plants and animals to observing eco-friendly initiatives such as repurposing rabbit waste as natural fertiliser, students saw how small, thoughtful actions can contribute to a larger environmental impact. They also engaged in hands-on activities, including planting herbs and making traditional snacks and beverages, enriching their appreciation of local culture.

“My trip to Harris Resort Waterfront Batam was both meaningful and eye-opening, as I learned how sustainability can be practiced in simple yet impactful ways, such as using rabbit waste as natural fertiliser. From planting herbs to making traditional treats, and learning about thoughtful customer service touches, the experience showed how culture, sustainability, and hospitality go hand in hand. It was a memorable day that deepened my appreciation for environmental responsibility.”

Beyond the activities, the experience encouraged students to think more deeply about sustainability, appreciate different cultures, and recognise the role they can play in shaping a more responsible future.
