Kickstarting Your Sustainability Journey in Food Manufacturing

November 30, 2023

Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC) is delighted to be part of the impactful ‘Kickstarting Your Sustainability Journey in Food Manufacturing’ event held on 28 Nov 2023, a tripartite initiative by Enterprise Singapore, Republic Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic (SP).

The Minister of Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore, Grace Fu, inaugurated the event by delivering an empowering opening address and unveiling the ‘Sustainability Playbook for Food Manufacturers’ launched by Enterprise Singapore. This moment stands as a significant stride in the Food industry's pursuit of sustainable practices.

Panel Discussion on Circular Economy:

Lim Keng Guan, Manager of Packaging Innovation at FM COI@SP (Food Innovation & Resource Centre), led an insightful panel discussion on ‘Food Side Stream Valorisation: Opportunities for a Circular Economy’. This engaging session featured esteemed speakers: Chua Keng Tai (CEO, Singnergy Group), Florence Leong (Co-Founder, KosmodeHealth Singapore), Dr. Jing Lin (CEO, Soynergy), and Wee-Tuck Tan (Co-Owner & Managing Director, The Brewerkz Group). Together, they shared invaluable insights, illuminating the challenges encountered and the supportive role played by the local ecosystem throughout their sustainability journeys.

The Upcycle Revival Challenge (URC) 2024:

Additionally, we are thrilled to unveil The Upcycle Revival Challenge 2024, in partnership with Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association (SFMA) and Enterprise Singapore. This challenge is designed to catalyse innovation in side stream upcycling, emphasizing side stream valorisation and reintegrating upcycled foods into the system. The initiative not only aims to enhance potential commercialisation rates but also includes elements on strategic branding and marketing plans.

Spanning over six months, forward-thinking companies would collaborate with students of SP from different disciplines to brainstorm, design, and promote innovative upcycled food prototypes aligned with sustainability objectives.

We're entering an exciting era with the increasing focus on sustainability within our local ecosystem. Together, let's collaboratively shape a better tomorrow for the food industry and future generations!
