Lab-Grown Chicken To Be Sold In Singapore After ‘World’s First’ Approval For Cultured Meat

December 02, 2020

First of its kind worldwide! This would likely be the world’s first regulatory approval for commercialisation of a lab-cultured meat product, to be happening in Singapore soon, as mentioned by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in its public announcement and as featured on CNA news article dated on Wednesday 02 November 2020. Consumers in Singapore can soon get a taste of the lab-cultured meat product being developed by San Francisco-based company, Eat Just, which is also known for its plant-based egg substitutes, a.k.a. JUST Egg.

In the company’s media release, it has said that its team of scientists, product developers and regulation experts have spent many months to document the cultured chicken’s production process, information which is required by SFA guidelines. “The company documented the purity, identity and stability of chicken cells during the manufacturing process, as well as a detailed description of the manufacturing process which demonstrated that harvested cultured chicken met quality controls and a rigorous food safety monitoring system”, said Eat Just.

Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just said that his company is first looking to offer the cultured chicken product to restaurants in the form of chicken bites or chicken nuggets that include other ingredients such as breadcrumbs and mung bean protein, before distributing it to the mass market.

“Singapore has long been a leader in innovation of all kinds, from information technology to biologics to now leading the world in building a healthier, safer food system,” said Mr. Tetrick as he explained why Singapore was chosen as the first launch pad  for its novelty product. And Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC) @ Singapore Polytechnic is honoured to work with Eat Just to facilitate the successful product development with using the lab-cultured chicken and the obtaining of the regulatory approval for commercialisation.
