Singapore Polytechnic and Transwarp Technology collaborate to develop talent in Artificial Intelligence

With the advent of big data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have become more important. The importance of AI is also apparent as Singapore aspires to become a Smart Nation. To help develop talent in AI, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese Big Data and AI software provider, Transwarp Technology.

The partnership with Transwarp will provide enhanced learning opportunities to about 200 students from the Diploma in Information Technology (Data Science & Digital Analytics Specialisation), the Specialist Diploma in Data Science (Big Data & Streaming Analytics), and the Specialist Diploma in Data Science (Artificial Intelligence) every year.

Recent research has predicted that the Big Data and business analytics market would grow globally from US$130 billion (S$182.4 billion) by the end of last year to US$203 billion by 2020. Singapore’s Committee on the Future Economy (CFE) has also noted that data is a valuable economic resource that allows the nation to overcome its intrinsic limitations on land, human capital and natural resources.

Win-win collaboration

As part of the collaboration, SP students will gain access to enterprise-level Big Data platform software and course curriculum curated by Transwarp.  This will allow them to gain hands-on experience designing and developing big data applications and applying highly optimized machine-learning algorithms on big data to solve real-world problems.  The training will also prepare students for the industry Hadoop certification by Transwarp which gives them a competitive advantage in their career as big data professionals.

The collaboration between SP and Transwarp will also include joint research projects in scalable high-performance AI and analytics frameworks, participation in joint R&D activities and seminars of mutual interest, and industrial attachment for students.

“We are honoured to collaborate with Singapore Polytechnic in the area of big data and data science. As the world’s leading Big Data and AI software provider, Transwarp will share our experience and technology capabilities with Singapore Polytechnic to enhance and accelerate technology innovation to more industries and areas.  Both organisations aim to nurture a pipeline of skilled data scientists who will help Singapore transition to become a Smart Nation,” said Yuanhao Sun, Founder of Transwarp.

“Singapore Polytechnic is one of Singapore’s pioneering polytechnics and their adoption of Transwarp Big Data Analytics stack shows their sense of championing the best technology for its students,” said Laurence Liew, Director, AI Industry Innovation, AI Singapore. “Transwarp has an impressive set of technologies in machine learning and Big Data and have been proven at scale in some of China’s largest financial organizations. We are excited about their collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic and their support of our academic institutions in Singapore”.

To further support Singapore’s vision to be a Smart Nation, SP will be working with the Singapore Fintech Association to offer practical short courses that adopt Transwarp technology for Fintech SMEs. The integrated Big Data and AI technology Transwarp platform with one-stop graphical AI development environment and built-in industry application templates will enable SMEs to easily build AI models to meet their business needs.

Mr Chia Hock Lai, president of the Singapore FinTech Association (SFA), said: “It’s a forgone conclusion that Big Data & AI is revolutionising many aspects of financial services from fraud detection to product design. To further enhance Singapore’s position as a leading Fintech hub and realising our ambition as a Smart Financial Centre, it is timely for SP, Transwarp and SFA to collaborate on industry-led training programmes that enable SMEs to accelerate adoption of effective and accessible Big Data & AI tools.”
