23-year-old woman loses battle with cancer before start of university term

Qiu Ruoxuan, a 23-year-old SP Diploma in Accounting alumna, passed away on 23 July after a courageous battle with cancer, just months before she was due to begin university. Despite multiple health challenges, including diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at 16, ovarian cancer in 2024 and later advanced liver cancer, she remained determined to pursue her education. During chemotherapy, Qiu insisted on completing her final examinations from her hospital bed, even though the polytechnic had offered to exempt her from the papers. She graduated with an impressive GPA of 3.7 and chose to attend her graduation ceremony wearing a wig alongside her classmates instead of having a private ceremony. After graduation, she received university offers from NTU and SMU. However, she was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in April and passed away before the start of the academic year. Her mother described her as an independent, resilient, and determined young woman whose perseverance inspired those around her. Similar news reported in Mothership and STOMP.
