As Singapore’s cinemas fade to black, is this the end of the road?

The Projector’s exit from Cineleisure and return to its original Golden Mile Tower location reflects a strategic recalibration rather than a retreat. Despite challenges such as falling cinema attendance, high rents, and the rise of streaming services, The Projector continues to appeal to a niche market and has diversified its offerings by hosting music events and drag shows. Raine Chin, Deputy Course Chair & Senior Lecturer for the Diploma in Business Administration at SP’s School of Business, noted that the Cineleisure tie-up involved substantial overheads due to its commercial setting. She and other industry observers believe cinemas can remain relevant by embracing "experiential cinema"—including thematic screenings, boutique concepts, collaborations with lifestyle brands, and enhanced F&B experiences.
