From 2022 to 2024, the annual average taxi utilisation rate in Singapore has remained above 95%. A spokesperson from LTA recently shared this data, emphasising that while ride-hailing platforms are becoming increasingly popular—and this trend is expected to continue—street-hail taxi services still play an important role in meeting point-to-point transport needs. The spokesperson noted that street-hail services remain essential for certain groups of passengers: older individuals or those unfamiliar with digital tools, tourists who do not know how to use local ride-hailing apps, and in high-demand locations such as airports and ferry terminals. Ms Janelle Lee, Specialisation Lead, Experience & Product Design from SP’s Media, Arts & Design School, added that features like hotline buttons, voice functions, and clear, simple icons help lower the learning barrier and give elderly users more confidence in trying out new technologies. "Ride-hailing operators should involve seniors and those unfamiliar with technology directly during the design phase—through workshops, interviews, or regular user testing. These steps can help uncover potential barriers and ensure the app genuinely meets user needs," she said.
