FranzWood carves out a niche in Singapore’s conservation sector

FranzWood, a consultancy and engineering firm specialising in conservation and restoration, has established a niche in preserving heritage structures, including century-old churches and copper domes. Founded in 2008 by Francis Lim, who has a background in civil structural engineering, the firm integrates expertise from various disciplines — including structural engineering, materials science, and architecture — to restore and protect historic buildings. In 2022, FranzWood collaborated with SP to develop a patination chemical blend tailored for tropical climates. Designed to withstand Singapore’s high humidity and intense sunlight, the innovation supports long-term conservation efforts in the region. The project, which cost approximately S$10,700, was partially funded by a grant from Enterprise Singapore, covering 70% of the cost. Francis Lim praised the collaboration, highlighting how FranzWood’s engineers and architects worked seamlessly with chemists and materials scientists from SP’s Advanced Materials Technology Centre (AMTC) to turn the concept into a practical solution.
