From seeking role models to becoming one, Youth with dyslexia finds path in medical field

SP alumnus and SIT graduate Ethan Wong was diagnosed with phonological and visual dyslexia as a child and struggled academically, but with support from the Dyslexia Association of Singapore, he developed learning strategies that worked for him. Despite facing doubts and significant challenges in secondary school, he achieved better-than-expected O-Level results and went on to study Biotechnology at SP. His research experience and his younger brother’s repeated X-rays and MRI scans sparked his interest in medical imaging, which he saw as similar to his own early dyslexia diagnosis and intervention. He eventually became a radiographer and hopes his journey will encourage other students facing similar difficulties to persevere and know that they are not alone.
