Man in 60s returns to alma mater after 40 years, Learns AI and carves out new path

After spending decades in the construction industry, 63-year-old Mr Chin Wing Soon returned to school 40 years after graduating from SP to pursue a Specialist Diploma in Data Science (Artificial Intelligence). Mr Chin originally earned a Diploma in Architectural Technology from SP in 1985 and later worked on major projects such as Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands. Facing rapid technological change, he said lifelong learning is now essential for keeping up with society. Despite attending classes after work, often rushing to campus for three-hour evening lessons, he said learning was enjoyable because he was studying subjects he genuinely liked. He compared retirement to “getting off a moving train early”, believing people who stop learning risk being left behind while the world continues moving forward. Mr Chin hopes to transition from the construction sector into the AI field, describing data as the “building material” of the future, similar to concrete and steel in the past. He sees AI as an “external brain” that can improve efficiency and help people manage complex tasks. In addition, he has enrolled in a new Diploma in Design and Media Management course at TP, which is expected to begin later this year. He said the course aligns more closely with his personal interests and has brought him new enjoyment in learning. COMMS’ note: This was part of our Graduation 2026 stories.
