Pilot programme launched, Optical shops can now offer cataract screenings, 3 optometrists are already operating

Soon, members of the public may be able to undergo eye disease screenings at optical shops, as authorities are piloting a new scheme allowing trained optometrists to conduct professional checks for common eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. The first three optometrists under the pilot have already begun offering these services. According to the 2024 annual reports by the Singapore Medical Council and the Optometrists and Opticians Board, Singapore currently has 333 ophthalmologists and 1,410 optometrists. Institutions such as SP and NP offer optometry programmes to train local talent in this field.
