SATS taps virtual reality, vehicle simulators to train cargo handlers

SATS has launched the SATS Immersive Centre, a new training facility at its Airfreight Terminal that uses virtual reality and vehicle simulators to train cargo handlers in a safe, controlled environment. The centre has four systems simulating a transporter, joint pallet container loader, forklift and tractor, with scenarios including hazards such as falling cargo and oil spills. New employees will use the simulators for training, while experienced staff will undergo refresher training. The facility was developed by SATS together with SP, with support from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. It will also be available to students at institutes of higher learning who are taking aviation-related courses. The initiative is intended to strengthen safety and operational readiness by allowing workers to practise responding to potentially dangerous situations before encountering them in real operations. Similar news reported in Lianhe Zaobao, Tamil Murasu, 8 World, CNA93.8 and Capital 95.8. CNA and Channel 5 featured Mr Duncan Sih, Deputy Senior Director, Engineering Cluster, who shared that VR is a cross-cutting skill that can be applied across different areas. He also noted that the knowledge gained through VR training for forklift or cargo handling can be transferred to different environments, as long as students are willing to learn and apply the skills.
