Seniors paint while students write poetry, Bishan fosters intergenerational understanding and inclusion through art

More than 90 seniors, persons with intellectual disabilities and students came together for an intergenerational art and poetry initiative titled "Free Your Mind, See You", using creative expression to foster community inclusion and strengthen connections across generations. Held at Bishan Community Club, the event brought together 50 participants from Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled, the Lions Befrienders Senior Activity Centre, and seniors from the Bishan East–Sin Ming community. Participants first expressed their thoughts and emotions through paintings, after which student partners created poems inspired by the artworks, interpreting the stories and feelings behind each piece. The participants were randomly paired with 41 students from educational institutions including the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, Presbyterian High School, and SP, encouraging meaningful interaction and demonstrating how art can promote empathy, intergenerational bonding and a more inclusive community.
