Singapore General Hospital, in collaboration with Youth Corps Singapore and TriGen, will recruit around 2,000 young healthcare volunteers over the next three years to assist patients, especially the elderly, with daily care, health monitoring, and rehabilitation support. The initiative, part of the SG Youth Plan, aims to benefit at least 20,000 patients and families. One volunteer, Huang Rong Er, a third-year student from SP’s Diploma in Media, Arts & Design, has previous experience working with elderly dementia patients in nursing homes. She shared that the hospital experience felt very different: “Dementia patients in hospitals often have unstable emotions. Sometimes they say they want to go home, sometimes they refuse to talk at all. We have to be patient and keep trying different approaches to reach them.” This collaboration is part of the SG Youth Plan, which aims to provide more opportunities for young people to give back to society while supporting Singapore’s healthcare system.
