Singapore has launched SG Translate 2.0, an upgraded national machine-translation capability developed by MDDI and GovTech to improve multilingual Government services. It combines large language models and neural machine translation, using Singapore-specific language resources including more than 7,000 official Government terms to better handle local terminology and context. Early testing showed stronger performance with Singapore-specific language, while trials involving 177 Citizen Translators found that users preferred the AI-generated translations in nearly half of comparisons. The system powers tools such as Polyglot and SG Translate Together, although human review remains important for sensitive or nuanced content. The initiative also complements SP’s responsible industrial AI work, which emphasises practical deployment, governance, contextual accuracy, and human oversight.
