The smiles on beneficiaries’ faces are the greatest motivation for SP student Xiang Yanting, 19, to volunteer. In her view, the true beneficiary of volunteering is herself, because each time she volunteers, she gains valuable experiences. Xiang Yanting is a student in SP’s Common Science Programme. Since 2023, she has embarked on a busy and colourful “volunteering journey”. She has helped with crowd control at the Chingay Parade, assisted persons with disabilities in playing lawn bowls, and joined residents and seniors in painting murals at libraries, nursing homes, and community centres, injecting vitality and colour into the community. She is also a youth volunteer in the Marine Parade–Braddell Heights GRC, where she joins fellow volunteers, grassroots advisers, and leaders in visiting the community to distribute daily necessities and brochures, listen to residents’ concerns, gather feedback, and share information about policies and events.
