Course Objective

After obtaining Class 2 Engineer CoC, marine engineers sail as 3rd or 2nd Engineer for a period of 18 months. Some may sail even as 4th Engineer, mostly doing operations level work. To take on the responsibility at management level requires changing their mindset to think as a manager, make risk based decisions, build confidence to lead ship staff and update their knowledge. Class1 CoC Orals preparatory course has been developed in close cooperation of MPA, the CoC issuing authority, and the maritime Industry.

This course will prepare a candidate for COC Class1 orals exams and develop competence to take on the responsibility of a Chief Engineer of a ship in accordance with STCW 95 Convention.

  2. Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering at the Management Level
  3. Maintenance and Repair at the Management level
  4. Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons Onboard at the Management Level
  5. Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements
 
Learning methodology- Guided Self Study
Unlike conventional full time instructor led courses, e.g. Class 1 & 2 COC which are run with class size of 40 students from 8AM to 5PM, COC Class 1 orals preparatory course for engineers has class size of minimum 6 and maximum 8 students. In order to keep the course fee viable for at least 6 participants the course is basically self study.

This "Guided self study course" makes extensive use of multimedia, case studies, problem solving discussions and notes.

This Guided self study course makes extensive use of multimedia, case studies, problem solving discussions and notes. A learning guide is provided to each candidate, which guides him through the course content in a systematic way. Lecturers are available to clarify any doubts at the end of the day. Students are responsible for their own learning.

By self study, a student acquires skills to search for information and understand the issues as expected from a Chief engineer. Students are advised to study and revise their COC Class 1&2 course notes (fundamentals) before signing up for Class 1 orals preparatory course.

Minimum Requirements

  • Class 2 Engineer Singapore CoC &attended the combined CoC Class 1 &2 course.
  • Approved sea-going service on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000kW propulsion power or more.
  • Eligible to appear for Class1 COC orals conducted by MPA

Certification / Accreditation

• Certificate of Attendance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate


• Certificate of Completion (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to participants who pass the examination and meet at least 75% attendance rate

Suitable for

2nd, 3rd or 4th Engineer who are willing to take on the responsibility at "management level"

Candidates will be assessed by MPA.

Insurance
If overseas Students intend to bring their family along to Singapore, they must obtain overseas travel and medical insurance for their family through their travel agent before they depart for Singapore or obtain from NTUC in Singapore.

Visa
Upon payment of course fees, Singapore Polytechnic will issue a SOLAR ID for 3 month visa.
Visa extension is subject to Immigration s approval.

Accommodation
Singapore Polytechnic does not maintain hostel facilities.
Private apartments are available in the vicinity of the campus and rooms are rented out
at about S$400.00 per month based on twin-sharing.
Daily expenses are estimated at about S$10.00 per day.

    Please note that one the maximum class size is reached. The online registration will be closed.

    Please note that an administrative charge of $15 will be imposed for any returned cheques from the bank or financial institution.

  2. All successful applicants will be notified with a letter of confirmation via email.

  3. Withdrawal and Deferment

    Withdrawal and deferment notice must be made in writing to the Professional & Adult Continuing Education (PACE) Academy via email to pace@sp.edu.sg. For withdrawal cases, the portion of course fee to be refunded is based on the date of notice as follows:

    • 2 weeks before the commencement of the course - Full refund
    • Less than 2 weeks before commencement of the course - 70% refund
    • On or after date of commencement - No refund
    The Singapore Polytechnic reserves the right to cancel or postpone any of the courses. Applicants will be duly notified and where applicable, the full fees will be refunded.

    The Singapore Polytechnic also reserves the right to amend the fees charged or the period and duration of the courses.

    The data provided to Singapore Polytechnic will be kept strictly confidential and will be used for the purpose of course administration. The data may be passed on to the relevant organisations that require the information related to the course.
