Course Objective

The course aims to provide Marine Engineer Officer at Management Level the skills and knowledge to manage the operation and safety of High Voltage (HV) Installations onboard. (ref STCW 2010 table A-III/2 and B-III/2). It gives participants

1. Understanding of the principles and concept of Electric Propulsion and Control System which are used on Marine vessels and Offshore installations.
2. Understand the risks management in High Voltage.
3. Know the safe protection gears available and how to use them properly.
4. Understand the safety procedures and management in HV operation and maintenance.

Course Outline

1.3 State the advantages of an insulated system

Day 2:
2.1 Explain the Generation and Distribution of high-voltage on A. Know the design features for High Voltage Installations onboard marine vessels and offshore installations.

B. Know the hazards in HV installations and understand the safe operations involving high voltage.

Topics to be covered

Day 1:
1 Explain the Classification of High Voltage
1.1 Explain factors considered in classifying a voltage as "high voltage" and reference to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60092, Electrical installations in ships series and IEC 61892, Mobile and fixed offshore units - Electrical installations series

1.2 State the advantages of High-Voltage.ships.
2.2. Describe with sketch the Electric Propulsion system.
2.3 Explain Synchro-convertors and Cyclo-convertors.
2.4 Describe Functional, Operational and safety requirements for a marine high-voltage system.
2.5 Explain the assigning qualified personal to carry out maintenance and repair of high-voltage switchgear of various types.
2.6 State the various types of High-voltage switchgear.
2.7 Describe the High Voltage equipment: Circuit breakers, Cable, Fuses

Day 3:
3.1 Explain the Remedial action necessary during faults in high voltage system
3.2 Explain the Switching strategy for isolating components of a high voltage system.
3.3 Explain the Selection of Suitable Apparatus for isolation and testing of high-voltage equipment
3.4 Explain the Switching and isolation procedure on marine high-voltage system, complete with safety documentation.
3.5 Explain the Performance of insulation resistance and polarization index on high voltage equipment.

Practical (4 hours)
Know the Operational Safety of High-Voltage Installations

4. Explain how to use HV personal protection equipment (PPE)
4.1 Explain Insulated Gloves, Goggles, Insulating Bars, Insulating Foot wear, Mates, Earthing Cables, HV Testers
4.2 Explain terms of Certification of Personal Protection Equipment
4.3 Explains HV safety procedures:
4.3.1 - Permission and coordination of HV works
4.3.2 - Information, Warnings and protection against unauthorized influence on safety.
4.3.3 - Assistance during HV work
4.3.4 - Checking for voltage presence before any work starts.

Minimum Requirements

Not less than 18 years of age;

Hold a Certificate of Competency as a Marine Engineer Officer Class 2, or MEO Class 5 Special Limit and

Have adequate working knowledge of English (Spoken& Written)

Certification / Accreditation

• Certificate of Performance (ref STCW 2010 table A-III/2 and B-III/2)

Suitable for

Holders of CoCs Class 1 or Class 2 Engineer Officer with no prior experience on High Voltage Installations.
