Company and Workforce Transformation

Mentorship Support Project

SSG-Funded Project Mentorship Improving Productivity and Skills

Mentorship Support Project (MSP) helps businesses solve operational and growth challenges through hands-on project-based mentorship, co-funded by the Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA). Singapore Polytechnic will work closely with businesses to design, implement, and sustain transformation initiatives while building internal skills for the workforce, to operate and sustain new solutions.

What is MSP?

It is a project-based engagement, not a classroom training programme. Businesses work with SP’s subject-matter experts to:

Group of working adults discussing.
Clarify business challenges and desired outcomes
Identify and prioritise areas for improvement
pace sq 2
Co-develop practical solutions implementable on the ground
Upskill impacted employees through project-based learning and mentoring
MSP focuses on doing real work, while building skills lasting beyond it.

MSP is supported under the Mentorship Support Grant (MSG) by the Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA).

This programme co-funds the project mentorship fees incurred by businesses, when engaging Singapore Polytechnic to deliver MSPs.

Employees are equipped with key skills to adopt, operate and sustain new solutions.

Mentorship Pillars

Digital Enterprise Implementation 3.0

Supports businesses looking to digitalise operations, improve productivity, and adopt Industry 4.0 solutions.

Project Scopes

  • Automation: Improving efficiency through technologies like robotic process automation, advanced scheduling, and production planning.
  • Connectivity: Connecting equipment, machines, and systems to enable real-time data exchange (e.g. IIoT, AIoT).
  • Intelligence: Using data, analytics and AI to generate insights for better decision-making (e.g. dashboards, video analytics, low-code / no-code applications, GenAI).

Projects combine technology implementation with skills transfer so teams can confidently use and sustain the solutions.

Challenge:

Jil & Yellowtail Pte Ltd, a homegrown brand of fish related products (e.g. fish balls, fish cakes etc.), is a vertically integrated company that produces fish balls in a central kitchen before distributing them to their 13 fishball noodles outlets islandwide.

Pivoting from a handmade hawker setting to the production of fishballs at larger scale was challenging, hence they sought SP's help to automate the fishball production process, including cooking and rinsing, which are labour intensive.

Solutions:

Cloud-based Automated Real-time Tracking

  • Developed and optimised the automation production processes for fishball production
  • Upskilled Production Operators with knowledge and skills in operating, troubleshooting and maintenance of temperature-controlled vat and methods to determine out of specification products

Impact and Results:

  • 4 employees impacted
  • 77% reduction of manpower required for the task
  • 56% increase in productivity of fishball cooking and rinsing

"We were satisfied with SP’s proposed solution and project outcome. The solution provided us the opportunity to increase the productivity of our fish ball production processes using process improvement and introduction of temperature-controlled solution.

Through the project, our production team became aware of the production and food safety gaps and were thus able to streamline the operation and produce more in a much shorter time. With a change in the operations, we were also able to achieve greater product quality and consistency by focusing our manpower into quality control and process management.
