26 Aug 2015

The Straits Times, 26 Aug 2015 - Around 350 people - 300 of them students sitting their exams - were evacuated yesterday after a solar car model caught fire on the SP campus. The fire was extinguished by SP’s emergency response team when the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived. Three security guards were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. SP highlighted that the health and well-being of staff and students are of top priority and will be providing them with the necessary care and support. Students who did not complete their exams will retake them next week and upcoming lessons and exams are not affected and will proceed as usual. Diploma in Nautical Studies student Wesley See Toh, who managed to submit his exam paper before the evacuation opined that info about the fire should be passed on more quickly as the smoke was already very thick when he left the building. He mentioned that there were still students taking exams in the building and he felt unsafe about the situation. Article also mentioned that there were three other fire incidents in the past three years and that SP has a detailed emergency response plan which includes regular training and fire drills. SP will also be stepping up education efforts by working closely with SCDF to conduct more fire safety talks on prevention, management and responsibilities for staff, students and vendors.
