Poly’s tie-up with RWS gives students an edge in jobs

31 Aug 2015

The Straits Times, 31 Aug 2015 - Under a formal arrangement between SP and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), selected students from SP’s Diploma in Tourism and Resort Management (DTRM) course will intern at the integrated resort and have the chance to join RWS at a higher position and pay scale after graduation. This new programme is the first of its kind among all the local polys and is in line with the national SkillsFuture plan to equip students and workers with more specialised skills. Under the latest tie-up, SP students will be assigned to two of RWS' three divisions - rooms, food and beverage, and attractions - starting next April for a longer internship which will last a year, up from the current three to six months. After graduating, those in the programme can begin working at RWS at a non-entry level, giving them a one- to two-year head start in their careers, depending on their abilities and performance. For instance, a graduate from the programme will join RWS as a guest service executive, a step higher than other graduates who will enter as guest relations officers. RWS' senior vice-president of human resources and communications, Mrs Seah-Khoo Ee Boon, opined on how the programme and longer internship stint is beneficial to the industry. SP’s DTRM course chair, Ms Emma Meyer, mentioned how SP is supporting the industry through the new programme. Emma also stated that students on the longer internship will still graduate on time as they are exempted from five modules that will already be covered earlier. SP’s DTRM student, Ms Annie Ooi, opined on how the longer and meaningful internship at RWS will give her a boost in her future career.
