Singapore Poly designed Smart Bike Alarm

20 Jan 2017

Lianhe Zaobao, 20 Jan 2017 - Article featured the Urban Farming Kit and the Smart Bike Alarm that were among the 94 projects showcased at the SP Engineering Show 2017. Both projects were designed in response to requests from industry partners. The Smart Bike Alarm was developed by three Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering students over nine months. It is aimed at cyclists who leave their bicycles unattended for a short while. The alarm will sound when it senses that the parked bicycle is being moved for a prolonged period of time. Coordinates of the bike's location are then sent to the owner. Currently, these students are in discussion with the industry partner to launch this Smart Bike Alarm in the near future. The urban farming kit which is devised by a team of four Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering students, is a multi-tiered rotating pot holder, about 3m high, that resembles a Ferris wheel. It allows more plants to be grown in a given space. The elderly can also do their gardening comfortably instead of bending down or squatting. The kit was built in collaboration with Kampung Senang Charity and Education Foundation. Chua Yong Chuan, who was the leader of the team, opined on the benefits of the urban farming kit as well as how the project enabled him to apply his engineering knowledge and skills to solve real-world issues.
