30 Sep 2015

Channel News Asia, 30 Sep 2015 - SP’s solar car, SunSPEC4, was featured in the prime time evening news segment. The solar car is Singapore’s sole entry in the 3,000 km World Solar Challenge in Australia next month and was completely designed and built by students and staff from the schools of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. SP’s senior lecturer and SunSPEC4’s team manager, Steven Chew, and student leader Darryl Ng from the Diploma in Mechatronics & Robotics, also gave a live interview on the solar car. Darryl shared how 20 months of hard work was lost when the original car was damaged in a fire one month ago. With support from their sponsor, Singapore Power, the team rallied and managed to rebuild the car within a month. Darryl also shared how the unique experience has allowed him to develop ‘soft’ skills as well as improve on his technical knowledge. Steven opined on the unique challenges of the World Solar Challenge and how the team is aiming to do well despite facing stiff competition from established universities. He also shared unique features and highlights of SunSPEC4. The solar segment starts from 41:45 to 41:58 and from 45:14 onwards.
