From Ship Captain To Director Of Singapore’s Renowned Maritime Academy

Article featured SMA acting director Captain Chatur Wahyu and his career journey in the maritime industry. He began as a deck cadet in 1987 with Neptune Shipmanagement Services, and attained the rank of captain with Ocean Bridge Shipping in 1999. A year later, he found his calling as an educator and embarked on a leadership position with SMA. He shared that he wanted to cultivate the next generation of seafarers to maintain the country’s competitive edge as a global leader in the maritime sector. Over the years, Capt Chatur has played a key role in developing holistic curriculum courses that address the specific needs of the maritime sector.  He also ensures that the courses and facilities are constantly refreshed and upgraded to prepare aspiring maritime students for the demands of the industry.  In 2005, he received an Excellence in Teaching Award from SP and served as an Elected Member of the Board of Studies in SP from 2012 to 2016.  Capt Wahyu has also served on many esteemed boards and councils in the industry, such as the Singapore Nautical Institute (SNI) in 2003 and the Marine Offshore Oil & Gas Association Singapore (MOOGAS) in 2016.  Apart from his Master Mariner qualification, Capt Wahyu also has a Master’s Degree in Maritime Laws (LLM).
