In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, IBM Asia-Pacific general manager Hans Dekkers said the 115-year-old technology company is no longer defined by mainframes and traditional enterprise systems, but is now focused on three key areas: hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. While IBM may not be the most visible name in the consumer AI race dominated by products like ChatGPT, its strength lies in enterprise AI, helping organisations deploy AI within their own data environments and integrate it into core business operations to drive transformation. Dekkers noted that Singapore's strong talent pool, vibrant business ecosystem and strategic location make it an ideal base for AI development. He also highlighted IBM's collaborations with academia and government, including an AI Research and Innovation Centre with the National University of Singapore, and partnerships with SP, RP and the non-profit Junior Achievement through IBM's SkillsBuild programme to equip about 4,500 Singapore residents with AI skills.
