CLS Students Supporting Community Health on World Diabetes Day 2025

On 15 November 2025, students from the Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) and Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) took part in World Diabetes Day 2025, organised by NHG Health’s Diabetes and Metabolic Steering Committee (DMSC). This annual community outreach event brings health screening, education and preventive care directly to residents, and our students played a meaningful role in supporting these efforts.

DBS students, returning for the second year, helped foster an engaging and welcoming environment throughout the event. Their presence across the activity zones encouraged residents to participate, ask questions and explore the various educational booths. By interacting with the community and helping to convey key health messages, they contributed to making diabetes awareness more approachable and relevant to attendees.

A meaningful extension this year was the involvement of DOPT students, who brought added depth through their focus on eye health. By highlighting the link between diabetes and vision changes, and guiding residents through simple screening activities, they helped the community better understand the importance of early detection and regular eye checks as part of holistic diabetes care.

Beyond the event itself, students also experienced purposeful hands-on learning. Through activities at the Active Health programme and the Nutrition Studio, they explored practical approaches to movement and healthy eating that complemented their classroom learning. These experiences strengthened their confidence in engaging the public and gave them valuable exposure beyond the classroom, enriching their holistic development as future healthcare professionals.
